Main Status Types

These are the three main status results you'll see when checking your SASSA SRD application.

Approved
Your application has been approved for the specified period. You meet all eligibility requirements.

What This Means:

  • Your application was verified successfully
  • You qualify for the SRD grant for that month
  • A payment date should be assigned
  • Funds will be processed according to your payment method

What To Do:

  • Check your status for a specific payment date
  • Ensure your banking details are correct
  • Wait for payment to be processed (2-3 working days after pay date)
  • If no payment date appears, wait and check again

Note: Being approved doesn't mean money is in your account. Look for 'Approved + Payment Date' or 'Paid' status.

Pending
Your application is still being processed and verified by SASSA.

What This Means:

  • Your application was received
  • SASSA is verifying your information
  • Checks are being run against government databases
  • No decision has been made yet

What To Do:

  • Wait patiently - this is a normal status
  • Check your status periodically (once a week)
  • Do not submit duplicate applications
  • If pending for more than 4-6 weeks, contact SASSA

Note: Verification can take time, especially during high-volume periods. Most pending applications are eventually processed.

Declined
Your application was not approved for the specified period. A reason should be provided.

What This Means:

  • You did not meet one or more eligibility criteria
  • The specific reason is shown with your status
  • You are not eligible for payment for that month
  • You may be eligible for future months if circumstances change

What To Do:

  • Read the decline reason carefully
  • Determine if the reason is correct or an error
  • If incorrect, submit an appeal within the appeal window
  • Gather supporting documents if you plan to appeal

Note: Common decline reasons include income source identified, UIF registration, and identity verification issues.

Common Decline Reasons Explained

If your status shows "Declined," one of these reasons will usually be provided. Understanding the reason helps you decide whether to appeal.

Means Income Source Identified
SASSA detected an income source linked to your ID number that exceeds the eligibility threshold.

Possible Causes:

  • You are employed and earning above R624/month
  • You have business income registered
  • You have investment income
  • Data from other government systems shows income

What To Do:

If incorrect, appeal with proof (bank statements, affidavit) showing you don't have the identified income.

Identity Verification Failed
Your identity information doesn't match the Department of Home Affairs database.

Possible Causes:

  • Name spelled differently than on your ID
  • ID number entered incorrectly
  • Information outdated in Home Affairs records
  • Technical error during verification

What To Do:

Verify your details match your ID exactly. Visit a SASSA office with your original ID if the issue persists.

UIF Registered
You are registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and may be receiving benefits.

Possible Causes:

  • You previously claimed UIF benefits
  • Your employer registered you with UIF
  • You are currently receiving UIF payments

What To Do:

If you're not receiving UIF benefits, get a UIF statement and appeal with proof.

Existing SASSA Grant
You are already receiving another SASSA social grant for yourself.

Possible Causes:

  • You receive Disability Grant
  • You receive Older Persons Grant
  • You receive another grant in your name

What To Do:

You cannot receive multiple grants for yourself. Child Support Grant recipients can still apply.

NSFAS Registered
You are registered with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.

Possible Causes:

  • You received NSFAS funding
  • You are currently a NSFAS beneficiary
  • Your NSFAS registration is still active

What To Do:

If you're no longer receiving NSFAS, provide documentation and appeal.

Government Employee
You are registered as a government employee receiving salary.

Possible Causes:

  • You work for a government department
  • You are a civil servant
  • Payroll records show government employment

What To Do:

If you're no longer a government employee, provide termination letter and appeal.

Self Exclusion Response Found
SASSA determined you don't meet income requirements or you're receiving support elsewhere.

Possible Causes:

  • Income above R624 per month
  • Receiving financial support from another source
  • Living in a government-funded facility

What To Do:

Review your financial situation and appeal with supporting documentation if the information is incorrect.

Referred
Your application has been sent to another department for additional verification.

Possible Causes:

  • Additional identity verification needed
  • Information flagged for review
  • Randomly selected for extra checks

What To Do:

Wait for verification to complete. About 80-90% of referred applications are eventually approved.
